The Legacy of the Hyart Theatre
A Community Treasure Since 1950, the Hyart Theatre has been a cornerstone of entertainment in Lovell, Wyoming, for over 70 years. Built by Hyrum (Hy) and Virga Bischoff, the theatre was designed with state-of-the-art technology and quickly became one of the finest venues in the region. More than just a movie house, the Hyart has been a gathering place for families, film lovers, and performers, hosting everything from blockbuster films to concerts and community events.
The Bischoff family’s passion for entertainment dates back to 1913, when Hy’s father traveled the Big Horn Basin with a mobile projector, bringing movies to rural communities. This dedication to sharing film and live performances led to the creation of the Hyart, which became known for its massive Cinemascope screen, stereophonic sound, and unmatched viewing experience.
Despite its long-standing role in the community, the Hyart closed in 2004. Recognizing its historical and cultural value, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. With overwhelming support from the people of Lovell, the theatre reopened in 2010, ensuring its legacy would continue.
In 2013, the community came together again to modernize the Hyart, upgrading to digital projection and sound, along with installing the largest movie screen in Wyoming. These improvements allowed the theatre to continue offering high-quality entertainment while preserving its historic charm.
Today, the nonprofit Hyart Theatre remains dedicated to bringing movies, live performances, and special events to Lovell and the Big Horn Basin. It stands as a testament to the power of community, the magic of the silver screen, and the enduring legacy of those who believe in the importance of shared experiences through storytelling and entertainment.
